DC Antiwar Protest: Nathan Speaks

Why I March, Why I Speak
© 2007 By Nathan James
As America enters her fifth year of war in Iraq, it seems overwhelmingly clear that the will of her people is being disregarded by their government. That such a sanguinary conflict should have continued for so long is an affront to the very ideals of American life. A war embarked upon under false pretenses, and prosecuted by a government which holds little regard for the long-established rules and codes of war, at that, is at best a black mark upon the historical record of the United States. When the season came upon us to lift our voices in deliberate protest against this tragic waste of young lives and untold billions of dollars, I felt it was high time to add my voice to the “chorus of dissent”. In this season of our outrage, I felt it my duty as an American, to invoke the principles of our Constitution and seek redress from our government.
I seek to make plain my distress at the conduct of our leaders in the place where our leaders congregate, in Washington, DC. The activist group Troops Out Now has been encamped on Capitol Hill every day this week. The Encampment culminates on Saturday with a massive march from the Capitol to the White House. There, I will join many other artists, public officials, and ordinary Americans who “want to see the killing stopped”. I will speak my mind before those assembled, and before the world. An indifferent President and an unwilling Congress must be reminded, well and truly, that their authority derives from the people. The people do not want these wars of conquest to continue. I will speak peace to those who advocate war. I will speak nonviolence to those who encourage killing. I will speak vigilance to those who demand we remain ignorant of the actions our government performs in our name.
Vigilance is the cornerstone of our democracy. We are implored by our Constitution to keep a watchful eye on our government, lest it becomes an overarching, totalitarian autocracy of the kind our forefathers fought the American Revolution to escape. We are warned that we stand mute at our peril. We are not prepared to permit our cherished Constitution and the freedom it grants to die in our time. This is the season in which we decide to re-establish government by the consent of the governed. Can we really be content in the knowledge that others will do this for us?
It is, to be candid, completely up to us whether this war continues or ends. When we raise our voices and say with passion, that further bloodshed is unacceptable, we begin to turn the wheels of change. When we exercise our right to protest, and expect that this expression of our will be respected, not suppressed, then we are reaffirming the very core of what it is to be Americans. It is time to march, and to speak, and to be heard. I hope you’ll join me in the season of protest which is now upon us.
